Steel America is looking to obtain experienced candidates within our Structural Department.
We are pleased to accept resumes for Structural Welders - 1st and 2nd Class. Additional incentive available for 2nd shift.
This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.
Qualifications
- Must be able to demonstrate ability to perform multi-pass, all position fillet and butt welds using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding)
- Knowledge of welding techniques (oxygen-acetylene, electric arc, and TIG), tools and equipment
- Technical training preferred
- Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade
- Must be able to work effectively with others
- Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates
- Enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces
- Must be a steady, reliable worker
- Must be able to compared and follow simple instructions
Responsibilities
- Weld together metal components of products, as specified by layout, blueprints, diagram, work order, welding producers, or oral instructions, using electric arc-welding equipment
- Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or think scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter
- Weld completion in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions
- Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment o fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding
- Manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal
- Clean or degrease weld joint or work piece, using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath. May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes
- Set up and operate welding equipment and select proper electrodes according to metals to be joined or as instructed
- Perform grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes
- Burning, washing, edge prepping using hand and automated equipment
- Flux cored inner shield and dual shield welding along with oxy-acetylene torching, air-arc, weld-wire gas, stick and pipe flange
- Construct or repair metal products by joining parts either manual (using a variety of welding methods including electric arc, MIG and TIG welding or oxy-acetylene welding) or by machine
- Read and understand the Chemist and Competent Persons reports and determine if job sites, particularly those involving combustible material, are safe for personnel and hot work
- Performs grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes
- Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required
- Will be required to wear personal protective equipment hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator
Other duties as assigned - Understand and act upon instructions

Overview
Steel America is currently hiring Inside Machinists for immediate for our 1st and 2nd shifts available.
Responsibilities:

- Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
- Perform complex operations on many kinds of machine tools, including drill presses, lathes, milling machines, boring machines, and precision grinding machines
- Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining
- Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers
- Select standard materials required for fabrication and machining work.
- Perform the machining operations, watch for problems in the production process, and check the accuracy of the finished piece against blueprints
- Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required
- Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications
- Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
- Set up and operate all types of shop machining tools or equipment to manufacture various parts
- Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly
- Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly
- Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance
- Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems
- Work includes small and large assembly, and machining of heavy steel
- Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision
- Apply knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and machine shop procedures
- Perform machine maintenance and is responsible for keeping work are clean and the immediate reporting of safety issues to Supervisor
- Use various hand and power tools for the completion of job tasks
- Understand and act upon simple instruction
- Must have regular, reliable attendance
Qualifications:
- Must be able to read and comprehend blueprints, drawings and other technical trade related documents.
- Mechanical ability, manual dexterity, and hand/eye coordination required to perform various projects, per drawings, sketches, and verbal or written instructions
- Skilled in the selection, set-up and operation of the appropriate machine tool(s) for a given type of work.
- Manual machine operation experience
- In-Place machinists experience preferred
- Technical training preferred
- Experience operating precision machine tools
- Willingness to travel
- Use of precision measuring equipment.
- Must be able to work effectively with others

- Must have own machine tools

Responsibilities
- Working with presses, floor shaping, forming plates, shaping from templates, marking symbols, doors, hatches and scuttles, rolls, presses and blacksmith shop
- Template creation
- Laying out blueprints and outfitting items
- Laying out blueprints, checking and fitting materials, tack welding of various sub-assemblies peculiar to the panel line and shell area such as decks, bulkheads, side shells
- Working on ship ways with the erection of units and installation of structural items
- Installation of structural outfit items, doors, ladders, foundations
- Effective sequencing of assembly and fitting
- Effective sequencing of assembly and fitting
- Correct use of heating torches in plate heat straightening and shrinkage
- Ability to use hand and power tools
- Shop and field fabrication
- Adherence to industry codes, regulations, and specificatic
- Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates
